Choosing Gemstone Jewelry
If you are looking for advice for choosing gemstone jewelry, here are my top recommendations, along with the reasons why.
These are based on my experiences and observations working with these beautiful gemstones. This page covers both timeless classics and jewelry with easy maintenance. Also, if you have an idea of what you'd like to buy, but want a little more information before you spend, this information should help. All gemstone jewelry, as well as all that you see on this website, is available at Chester Crafts in Chester, NJ 908-879-2900.
Timeless Classics
When you consider timeless classics, choosing gemstone jewelry becomes easy. There are a few gemstones that have been highly valued around the world and through the ages. You probably won't go wrong with these. Both pearls and turquoise fall into this category. Pearls were once valuable real estate, and turquoise was buried with the Pharaohs as part of their vast wealth. Both gemstones have been in vogue for about the last 6,000 years, and it's doubtful they will pass out of fashion any time soon. Buy either of these, and you've made an excellent decision.
- Pearls require extra care, but their beauty makes them worth it. If diamonds are a girl's best friend, then pearls have to be a close second.
A+ grade pearls are good, but if you really want nice ones, stick with AA grade or higher.
If you want beautiful, high quality pearls but don't want to spend a fortune, look for non-white, non-round natural colored pearls. Natural colors include off white, peach, and light pink among others. You can get beautiful pearls for much less this way.

- Turquoise is a soft stone, but not to worry... Nearly all of what's on the market is hardened with an undetectable protective coating to make it more durable. Make sure you buy your turquoise from an honest dealer, as much is dyed and sold at undyed prices.

Easy Maintenance
If you are choosing gemstone jewelry for someone who would prefer low maintenance, then I'd recommend amethyst, black onyx, and any type of agate. These are excellent for people who tend to be hard on their jewelry, or who might otherwise be happy with something easy to care for (like a new mother, for example).

Almost Ready to Buy
If you have an idea of what gemstone jewelry you'd like, but want to get a little more educated before you go shopping,
go to the International Colored Gemstone Association's website
(a new window will open). They have a wealth of information, and armed with this you can make smart purchasing decisions. After all...why pay more if you don't have to?
