Handmade Gemstone Earrings

From the sparkle of expertly cut amethyst to the silvery black shimmer of hematite, handmade gemstone earrings offer a wide variety of colors and beautiful qualities.

When buying handmade gemstone earrings, the gemstones are often enhanced, especially at lower prices. I'll tell you honestly what you're getting here.

All the gemstone earrings shown here are also available off-line at Chester Crafts and Collectibles, 28 Main St., in Chester NJ.

Pearl Earrings

You can never go wrong with pearl earrings. In vogue  for thousands of years, pearls are a timeless classic.

These top quality freshwater, cultured pearls are  flawless and absolutely beautiful. They come to you on  14K gold-filled posts.

If you have studs of any kind, here's how to take care of them so they last forever.

Pearl Care
Pearls are like roses...they're very beautiful, but they need a bit more attention. Rather than put all the information here, go to the pearl care page for how to store and care for pearls.

Hematite Earrings

hematite earrings
Hematite earrings are ideal for winter, and go  perfectly with anything from jeans for formal wear.

Most hematite on the market, including what is shown  here, is manmade. Manmade hematite is virtually  identical to real hematite (it even has the same  chemical composition). It is very easy to form into  detailed shapes, and looks and feels like the real  thing.

If you have hematite jewelry, more likely than not, it's manmade.

Hematite Care
Hematite is a hard stone and is very easy to care for. All you need to do is polish the sterling using a liquid silver polish. For more information on hematite history and care, click here.

SIDEBAR: POPULAR COLORS
Black and red are among the most popular colors forecasted for the winter '06-'07 season.

Turquoise Earrings

turquoise earrings
This turquoise is from the Hubei Province of mainland China.

Turquoise is a very soft stone. All turquoise on the  market, this included, is stabilized to preserve its  color and improve its hardness.

Chinese turquoise sometimes is dyed as well. Whether  this turquoise is color enhanced I do not know. If  you definitely want turquoise that isn't color enhanced,  then Mexican turquoise is for you.

Turquoise Care
Although stabilized, turquoise is still a soft stone. Treat it with care. To polish the sterling, use a Brilliant! Polishing Cloth. For more information, go to the turquoise care page.

SIDEBAR: CARE OF STUDS
If your studs have no prongs...

Studs, regardless of where you bought them, adhere to earring posts with a very, very strong adhesive. (The adhesive I use is supposed to last until about Y3K.)

But let's not tempt fate. When you are taking the backing off stud earrings, don't pull on the gemstone. Pull on the earring post...there's a little something to grab onto in the back. Pull from there.
