One of the really neat things about handmade gemstone jewelry is that there's a lot more out there than diamonds, ruby, sapphire, and emerald.

Just because you haven't heard of it before doesn't mean it's mediocre or second-class.

Some of these unknown beauties offer real bargains. For example, green amethyst is a rare gem, but few people know it exists. Compare high grade green amethyst jewelry to a similar grade of emerald, and you'll see an enormous price difference.

Which gemstones are precious and which are semi-precious? In a nutshell, the jewelry industry has banned the use of semi-precious...A ruby, emerald and sapphire can sell for $100 per carat and a fine Paraiba tourmaline can sell for $20,000 per carat. That seems pretty precious, doesn't it?

The industry is struggling what to call those "other gemstones". For some reason, gemstone-varieties-other-than-ruby-emerald-and-sapphire hasn't stuck yet. As a note, old habits die hard, so you will still see the term "semiprecious" used.

You'll find both well-known gemstones, like turquoise, and a few you probably didn't know about, like labradorite or different types of agate. (Labradorite is one of my very favorites.) All are beautiful.
